Got rid of our diseased peach and nectarine tree. For all the effort it took to try and keep them reasonably healthy, we go next to no reward. But once we tidy that bed up, we are putting in some more citrus. An orange or a lemonade tree and a lime tree. I'd love some plum trees up there too.

**I understand this, on the surface looks like a huge contradiction- pulling out trees with a diesel guzzling 4WD, is not very greenie of me.**

I made my first (of 3) keepsake quilts for my boys. I used the" Stash Buster Quilt Pattern" and built on it to make it single bed size.

I tried to fussy cut a block with Cams (boy#2) "going home" outfit. I fumbled along, it was an epic pain in the rear.

I'll applique the other 2 outfits I think?

There are a few stuff ups, but hopefully I don't make those again with the other 2.

Hopefully he will keep this forever and at least pretend to love it. When I visit him in his own home I hope he pulls it out of the cupboard and places it somewhere, as if he has been using it.

I kept the spew stains as he was a super spewer. No one would hold him (up to the age of about 1). If I asked anyone to nurse him for a bit, they would give me a look of horror and either run off screaming or suddenly need to pick up the dog poo or wash the cat.

Make puffs!

I made a delicious vegetable curry* in the slow cooker and had loads left over. So instead of making myself eat it for lunch for the next 3 years I decided to add puff pastry, and voila! a whole new meal.

I had enough for dinner and enough to freeze in the vacuum bags (best invention evah- and I enunciate the " ah " like a 14 year old girl)

" no! mine!"

Just make sure you cool them before you give them to the baby, another notch in my bad parenting belt.

*Recipe for veg curry

a pile of pumpkin, sweet potato, choko (yep I'm making it cool again) potato cut into chunks, throw it in the slow cooker with a third to a half a jar of curry paste, I used Rogan Josh, add a few red lentils, enough to thicken the sauce but not too many that the men find them and whinge about eating "hippy food" . Add some water, about 2/3 up the veg, a veg stock cube. Throw the lid on. Once cooked, add some frozen peas. ( Some natural yogurt would have been nice mixed in at the end too) serve with some homemade naan.

When Cam (3.5y) comes home from a sleepover with Grandma and Grandad, and he and Blake (5.5y) jump into each others arms, with smiles bigger than Ben Hur, laughing hysterically. Surely I must be doing something right.

I am so proud my boys can show their love and bond with affection. I hope they continue to do this, always.

These were gifted to me by an online friend. She hand knitted these herself. Aren't they the bomb!? Couldn't have been better timing. With soccer season upon us, I see these being used like this. A lot!

Lead You Up The Garden Path

Literally. This is what's happening in my garden at the moment. I have made every effort to hide incriminating evidence of how unkempt my backyard is. I have matchbox cars galore all over, trucks, diggers, dozers, bikes, dog poo and broken tennis rackets...

Lots of Capsicums

A pineapple top. I was told to plant the top of a pineapple (hot tip peeps!), so hopefully this will work.

Loads of garlic, I'm a bit of a garlic fiend.

I just love passionfruit flowers! I love how pretty they are and that it's a sign of passionfruit to come.

My herbs are doing OK, I need to remember to water them more frequently. (oops!)

The mandarins are not far from being ripe, the tree is laden. The boys have decided that near enough is good enough and have been picking and eating the partially ripe ones.

What is wrong with my Granny Smith apple tree???? *sad face*

I also have spinach, beetroot, broadbeans, strawbs and snow peas in. The beets and spinach are off to a rocky start, because boy#2 decided he needed that dirt, right where they were planted, for a motoX track. I was decidedly unimpressed.

A Little Late to The Party

No, I'm not talking about Kate and Wills party, I already had to turn down that invite as Fridays are hair washing day.

I'm talking mug rugs. There was a little bit of a frenzy happening surrounding mug rugs not too long ago. I drew inspiration from The Mad Quilter and decided to give it a crack. What better time, when mothers day raffles and stores call for donations.

This one, including the mug, chocolates and hot chocolate and latte sachets, is going to Blakes school for the mothers day stall.

I enjoyed this, I had some charm squares left over from another project. Mug rugs are a great way to use up scraps.

This is actually square, believe it or not, it's just my dodgy photography making it look distorted. I'm still unsure if I like the binding....

Anyway, with pre-school needing donations (and I should donate considering I'm the P&F president, haha) I will be knocking out a few more of these.

Reusing, Recycling, Reconstructing

Whatever you like to call it, I like to do it. I feel I am doing my small part, financially and ecologically when I use the resources already at my my disposal.

I had these 2 pair of pants, which are too big for me (yay) and the top which I don't wear, ever. So instead of throwing them (they were too ratty for the Vinnies bin) I used them for pants for wee boy#3.

Using the Scientific Seamstress pattern, these were super quick to knock up.

A nice pair of cargos for the boy, with minimal effort. these will look good as a pair of 3/4 shorts too, as he grows taller. I see a good few years out of these.

The denim shorts, were made into jeans. I was able to keep the hip pockets, and the bottom hem. One less step. I had some black Stella and made a yoga waist. Easy Peasy.

The best thing about these pants, it doesn't matter if they get trashed. I have already got my moneys worth out of them, they owe me nothing.

I have also been busy making pants for the older 2 from Ottobre mags, lots of tees are being made too, but I won't bore you with those.

Camping Cheer

In the second week of school holidays we went camping with another family. It was nice to spend quality time as a family for a WHOLE WEEK! Because my husband works very hard (bless him) long hours and shift work to boot, we don't often get too much time together as a famlily. We manage weekenders camping, but seldom get more than 3 days.

So we went down to Upper Colo Reserve. It would have to be one of the most beautiful places in NSW

All 6 kids (my baby is missing from this photo, he was in bed at this stage) loved the fire, lots of flaming marhmallows.

The campoven was constantly in use, we ate like kings

Lots of fun in the crystal clear (freshwater) river, the dogs coat has never been cleaner.

And Bushwalking

We had warm showers under the blue sky. With no power and very limited amenities, we absolutely adore this kind of camping. We take the dog, the pushbikes and loads of ~~beer~~ cheer.

Easter Hat Parading

I was intending to blog this weeks ago. But I've been ~~busy~~ slack.
But anyway...This is boy#1's first Easter hat parade. We scoured google to find a design we were happy with, chose the materials and decorations, and Blake went for it. I only cut out the mask and drew the shape for the ears, he did the rest.

Admittedly, he did look like he had myxomatosis by the parade, but he loved it and had a great time. Perhaps I'll get a little more ~~competitive~~ creative next year and go all out like Mrs Woog

Balance, Is there Such A Thing?

Is there really a happy harmony between family and work? Between letting the children enjoy their childhood, but being strict enough so they don't walk all over you? Between working hard for the financial pay off or sacrificing and sometimes just going without? Between having a clean and tidy (ultimately immaculate) home and just living in it?

These questions are bothering me today. Today is one of those days where everything is just piling up. I'm such a laid back person, each of my 3 children have never been a shock to the system, we all just go with the flow, the housework gets done, in time, we always make do, we have everything we need, I enjoy working hard (for Giggle n Squeak and volunteering in the many pre-school/playgroup and school events and committees), I love being a SAHM, I go with the flow with discipline and child rearing, not sweating the small stuff. All that small stuff has now jumped up in front of me and given me one mighty bitch slap.

Maybe I'm just hormonal?

Have you missed me? (please stroke my ego) I have been very slack with blogging. School drop off and pick ups, playgroup co-ordinate-ing, p&f committee-ing, management committee-ing, canteen-ing, sewing, baking, nappy washing and changing, housework, veggie gardening yadda, yadda, yadda have been taking up much of my "blog time". The small window I get, I read my blogroll, then I usually have the 18m boy on my lap saying "YESSSSSS!" as I unclasp my maternity bra for the 84th time that day. *sigh*

But anyway, enough of the lame excuses, I have been busy for Giggle n Squeak. I have loaded a dino tail and a lions tail in my Oz handmade store. If you have a particular animal in mind, let me know, I may be able to help with a custom order.

The Greenie Pizza

Do you have those 'can't be bothered' dinner nights? I certainly do, and nights like that I usually grab some lebonese bread, some homemade tomato sauce* I have frozen in the freezer and whatever veg I can find in the fridge. I usually try to hide something nutritious on the pizza, just to ease my guilt. I shave off the top of some broccoli (Ialso peeled and finely dice the stem) and put it on the bottom with a small amount of cheese.

Throw whatever else you have on top and voila! a pizza without the guilt!

* can of tomatoes, whizzed in the food processor with big handful of fresh basil, freeze into 1/2 cup portions

Tears and Tantrums

And no, they weren't (all) from me. We started the day with a treat (hopefully a new tradition for first day of school) of pancakes for breakfast.

Then, as we were about to walk into the classroom, the heels dug in, the lip dropped, the arms crossed the chest. The tantrum started. After trying a few mummy tactics, we just had to walk out and leave him tantruming, he ran after us, he was quickly grabbed by 2 teachers. We just had to keep walking.

My Dad called to ask how he went and a few silent tears slid down my cheeks as I rehashed, trying to laugh it off. I am now fighting the urge to call the school to check up on him.

One of "Those" Parents

EEP! I think I am one of THEM!!!!

Yesterday Blake had his Best Start assessment at his new school. All I told him, was that he was going in to meet with his new teacher.

I was waiting patiently in the office with the other mums. one of the other teachers brought a child back, and chatted to the mum about how good she was at maths, and colours etc.(yes, I was eavesdropping)

Then when Blake came back with his teacher I simply asked him if he had fun, "yep!" was his reply. His teacher laughed and said Blake told her all about his new schoolbag he got from Santa. I waited to hear how he went with the assessment......nope, nothing. All I got was, "he is certainly ready for school"

Dammit!! I want nitty gritty details! (this is where I morphed into the parent who expects his child to excel and the teachers to sing his praise)

I smiled and laughed and agreed, reminded Blake to say "thank you and see you Wednesday"

I bit my tongue to ask just how good he went. I just cannot believe I was like that. I am usually so laid back and carefree, then to turn into a rabid, information, praise seeking monster. I think I am going to need rehab before the term has even started. The child care worker in me was saying "well she didn't say anything positive, so she is leaving out all the negative info" The rational side of me is saying "she is obviously a different teacher than the one who came in and gave the mother details" GAH!

I'm crazy aren't I????

I just popped down to my local Foodworks to grab a few things I forgot in the weekly grocery shop. One thing that was on the list was choc chips, I happened to chance upon the clearance rack and noticed Lindt (my favourite) Christmas chocolates at a bargain basement price of $3.39. I had a quick double check in the baking aisle, and yep- loads cheaper than choc chips and melts. I raced back and grabbed a couple of bags

So the boys will be getting LINDT choc chip biscuits this afternoon.

How's that for a Monday WIN?

Baby Showering

I finished hand sewing the binding on this today (Have I told you recently how much I detest handsewing?) It's for a baby shower gift next weekend. I'm rather pleased with it. The colours look awesome, (the boys helped me choose) and I would love to keep it. I used the Charm Pack Baby Quilt tutorial. I did change the quilting, as it's quicker and easier on the machine doing the straight lines. (Less of a head f^#k)

And this one is the grown up version I made for my sister and her boyfriend for xmas. I made it larger so it's more of a lap quilt. I had some bunching in the top left corner, but was able to stop that happening again in the baby one.

Snack Attack

I have seen a few mums around the traps on facebook asking for lunchbox ideas. I am not yet a seasoned "school mum", Blake only starts Kindergarten (1st year of formal schooling in NSW) this year (a week and a half to be exact- eep!!) But I thought I would share a recipe which gets a workout here. It's adapted from the banana muffin recipe in the family Circle "Commonsense Guide to Cooking" book. But I have changed it to be healthier.

Ingredients

2 cups wholemeal SR flour
3/4 cup bran
1/4 cup LSA
1/2 cup raw sugar
2 eggs lightly beaten
3/4 cup skim milk
60g melted butter
1/4 cup honey
2 ripe bananas mashed.

Method

mix flour, sugar, bran and LSA in bowl

Mix together eggs, milk, honey, butter and banana in seperate bowl, then add to flour mix.

stir until just mixed.

bake at about 180 until golden and spring back when touched.

This makes about 3dozen for me. 1 dozen regukar size & 2 dozen mini muffins. They freeze really well too.

These are cornflake biccies from Let's Party Additive free- Super quick and easy and you always have the ingredients in the cupboard.

Good Golly Miss Holly said it all really. Kudos to Miranda Kerr for sharing a breastfeeding photo. I hope this inspires women, and shows that feeding in public is ok, not taboo.

I honestly wish our society didn't look down their nose at mothers feeding their children in public, newborns, infants or toddlers. A mothers life should not be bound to home in case her baby gets hungry in the middle of a grocery shop or coffee at the local cafe.

Devastating

The QLD floods are just heartbreaking, the images, the families losing loved ones or have loved ones missing. The complete upheaval. I am imagining many children just beyond scared, many parents fighting to keep their families safe. People worried for their friends and families in the affected areas and not being able to help in any way.

It is really overwhelming me at the moment, besides giving money, I have no capacity to help. Giving money doesn't seem enough. I am, on some level, feeling the pain, heartache, and fear. It deafening me almost.

Coupled with the news that Lori has lost her husband in tragic circumstances, I feel I am stuck in the mud, not able to help, not able to relieve anyones pain.

I apologise for the sombre posts these last couple of days.

I hope those nursing hangovers are coping ok and that today is easy on you. (I was asleep by about 11pm- yep, party animal I am)

I wanted to post about what my 5yo said to me yesterday. (I know this may not be as cute to you as it is to me- but hey, it's my blog! LOL)

I cut up an 8.8kg watermelon and put it in a container in the fridge, so the kids could help themselves whenever they felt. By mid afternoon, there were about half a dozen small pieces left. I asked Blake to save the rest for the next day.

He comes in to me and says:
"I had another piece of watermelon Mummy, I tried not to, but I couln't stop"

Now, I'm sure today he could very well be saying the same thing- just replace watermelon with poo.

Christmas List Dilemma

Have your children given you their xmas wish lists?

My boys have, they have only asked for 1 or 2 things. Blake (5yo) has asked for a Ben10 watch. That's it. He has been asking for one for months, and months, and months..... The only thing I have an issue with, is that it's licensed. So where do I draw the line with being an over zealous hippy mother, making a silent protest about over priced, over commercialised, plastic crap, and buying whatever the little darling wants?

Lets try it again froma different angle

I did end up buying him one, I justified it by the thinking that it was the only item he has asked for, it does promote outside play (read:staying out of the house, thus less cleaning for moi) And he can use his imagination- he has a fabulous one at this stage.

Now Cameron, (3yo) has also asked for one too, only because big brother, his idol, asked for one. Monkey see, monkey do. But the only other thing Cam has asked for is a guitar, an air guitar to be exact. Now, one part of me wants to give him an air guitar- no cost for me- but I know he doesn't fully understand what an air guitar is. What's the dilemma here you ask? Well, we already have a wiggles guitar, so I don't really want to be buying guitars just for the sake of it. Would you buy a guitar? bearing in mind I (santa) has already got him a Ben 10 watch.

Totally NOT cool mum!

I'm sure you are wondering why I seem to be such a scabby bitch, not spending much on the kids at xmas. Well, truth be told, we have got them (yep all 3) a PeeWee 50 as a combined present. (Santa only gives small gifts- i'll be damned if Santa gets the credit for the good shit) So I am not being a scrouge McDuck, but I also don't see the point in spending excessive amounts on each child, when they can get a great pressie to share.

The 1st of december brings much joy and excitement for me. It's the first day of summer (very disappointed though- i'm looking at you mother nature!) and it's the start of the magic moments christmas brings.

We put our tree up today- instead of the large plastic one we normally use, we decided to go with a real tree- a christmas bush.

(Joel decided he would help by climbing up onto the chair and throw every ball from the tub onto the floor)

Tarting it up {Tutorial}

We are having (professional) family photos next week, and I am doing the daggy thing of having us all in matching/same colours. I chose red because the boys look pretty damn good in red and they had nice red shirts (and denim shorts) but I needed something red. I couldn't find anything, so I bought a cheap singlet from JayJays (2 for $15??) and decided to brighten it up a little.

Here is a quick and super simple tutorial to tart up a plain shirt.

I had some scrap knit in my stash and cut 2 long strips- no need for it to be neat if you don't want to.

Using the longest stitch on my machine sew the length of the strips.

Pull the threads to ruffle the fabric up, you can play around with how "ruffley" you want it. Then by rolling the ruffle around make a flower (or rose), fiddle around until you have it looking how you want it. Handstitch the flower in the centre to hold it, then handstitch it onto your shirt. I stitched it in about 4 spots as it was a heavy flower and to keep it sitting nicely.

Hopefully it looks nice in the photos! might even wear this for xmas.

I do, absolutely, without a doubt LOVE christmas time- I love gift giving, I love the magic (especially when it comes to children), I love the decorations and I love the family gatherings.

Another thing I love about christmas, is secret santa. I joined up to secret santa on a forum I frequent, but there is a twist this year, not only do you buy a present with a rough budget (of $25 I think??? not sure, because I didn't stick to it. LOL) you had to buy a shitty present- something truly crap. There is a competition for who buys the crappiest, shittiest (and funniest) gift. A budget of about $10. I have a pretty good sensse of humour (well I think so anyway) so this appealed to me- But I soon realised, what I think is knee slapping, tear jerking, breath taking hilarious, others might not, so I did struggle a little. I don't think i'll win any crappy gift giving prizes, but I do think it's a pretty shitty gift.

Slaters!

So, I have a gardening question....

My strawberries plants are pumping out the strawbs, but they are not getting very big and as soon as they ripen, Slaters are getting into them. Now this is making my boys VERY sad. I think the slaters are the same culprits who are destroying any squash is that is growing too.

So my question is.. How the hell do I destroy these horrible little bugs????? I want strawberries dammit!

First Quilt

I am attempting my first quilt. I am starting off easy for 2 reasons. 1. I don't want to go in too hard too fast 2. this one is actually a practice run before I make one for my husbands cousins baby shower. I am using the charm pack baby quilt tutorial. I have been wanting to do this craft activity with the boys for a little while now, well, since I saw it on Sew Liberateds blog.

So I seized the chance while the baby slept.

I Hope I have done them right? I guess I'll find out when they dry. lol

I got the felting wool from winterwood and the MooGoo soap from my local chemist (I am a massive MooGoo fan btw, and am super excited my chemist now stock it, although I prefer online shopping, I like that I can get what I want instantly at the chemist)

This post should have been on friday for FYBF, but life got in the way unfortunately. I have been flat stick preparing for my babys 1st birthday.

We had his party today and I did it all additive free.

I used the "let's party additive free" book.

We had reverse fairy bread, fruit kebabs, cinnamon and BBQ popcorn, ants on a log, veg sticks, choc chip biccies, kettle chips, natural confectionary lollies. I made broadbean and parmesan dip and egyptian beetroot dip using the beets and broadbeans from my garden. Plus the sausages, bread rolls, salad, potato bake, and pasta salad with my own mayo.

I also did his cake additive free. (except for his name) using additive free/natural food colours, but I royally buggered up the cake. It was too crumbly, even when frozen, and I got crumbs everywhere. And at 1am, I did not want to start over.

and his present from mummy and daddy. The ring stacker was super fiddly! (I wasn't happy with how it turned out- but I know how to do it better next time- if there ever is a next time lol)

Fridays are Flog Ya Blog friday over at Random Ramblings of a SAHM . Keen as mustard to join in, although I don't have an overly exciting blog post to coincide with my dive into blog flogging.

So I thought I would share a quick recipe with you.

Chocolate Topping. (additive free) We ALL love chocolate yes??

So here it is:

1 teaspoon cornflour
2 Tablespoon cocoa
1 Tablespoon nuttlex
1/3 cup golden syrup
1/4 cup water

1. Mix cornflour and cocoa in small saucepan. Add margarine and golden syrup
2. Add water, stir over a low heat.
3. Simmer for 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.

It will keep for a few days in the fridge if you need to.

I use this in milkshakes, on ice-cream & banana smoothies. Make a double batch, it doesn't last long ;)

I decided I need more bees in the yard. More bees= more harvest. so I bought a grevillia at the markets today. Might get another for further up the yard?

I heard somewhere to put milk cartons on your celery for longer stalks. Hope it works!! I normally buy un- homogenised milk (Udder farm- a local company) but I bought some store milk for the cartons. Keep your fingers crossed for me, they were growing really well before I put these on, and I want them to keep growing well.

The mandarin tree is flowering after the fruit

The nectarines and peaches are coming on and are due to be sprayed for fruit fly. I don't normally use sprays but I would have no fruit if I didn't spray.

The lemon tree is flowering- I am really hoping for some fruit. It will be in for 2yrs this christmas and I haven't harvested 1 lemon yet :(

I have loads of flowers on the passionfruit vine- Again, fingers crossed for the first fruit from it

And our 3 chooks are being good girls and giving us 3 eggs a day, even if they do break in and steal my spinach from the veg patch >.<

Been Lax

We have been struck down by the gastro bug since Friday- that's right peeps,Friday. I now have some very skinny and sad little boys. I wish I could stop the vomiting for them.

So not alot happing here, well actually lots happening, but not all positive. Think, brand new plasma attacked by a 3yo weilding a plastic hammer and then finding out we forgot to update our insurance with accidental coverage. >.<

I do have some pics for you, but unfortunately the USB cord for the camera has packed it in. So you will have to wait until the new arrives. ;)

I have manged to make a lemon (and lemonade) meringue pie today, as well as a rhubarb, berry and custard tart. Our chooks are making us proud with 3 eggs a day, being sick, I have been unable to keep up with them. At least those made a small dent in our supply. I have also decided to add rhubarb to my patch, I'm so loving it right now. We have also decided we are definately putting in a lemondae tree- such a delicious fruit!

I hope your week is much more positive than mine at present.

Happy 3rd birthday to my lil' cowboy for yesterday.

We celebrated by going for a ride on his new bike, and some craft in the afternoon.

And of course some birthday cake after dinner.

I love how my middle man is becoming such a independent little dude. He loves bullriding and riding his bike. He says to me " I love you to the cheeky bulls and back" he gets me to sing " Jessies Girl" each night because it's his favourite song.

Spring is here!

I do love spring it's the very welcome warm up to summer- my favourite season. The nectarine and peach trees are flowering.

the lemon tree needs some TLC

the broadbeans will be harvested soon

the veg patch is flourishing

the strawbs will be ready in about 4weeks

on this, the 3rd day of spring it was cold and rainy- so an afternoon in the kitchen with my mini men was called for, we got back into the artisian dough (I have no idea why I haven't made it lately?? super easy and cheap), made wholemeal coconut and banana loaf with organic coconut chips, wholemeal sweet potato and craisin muffins, low fat mango mousse, meatloaf and baked veg.

How is your spring shaping up?

We finally have our chooks and their motel. We have 3, Lightening McQueen, Train and Zebra. The older 2 boys named them with absolutely no input from myself. No idea how they decided on those names?

I wanted to use this shirt I no longer wear and make it to match the re-fashioned shorts.

I did run into a small problem, I still had a little of the pink stiching in the usable fabric. Nothing a seam ripper cannot fix though.

The orange rib knit was scored from the local op shop. So all in all a very cheap shirt and outfit with the shorts. And 2 items of clothing have a new life.

These are a pair of shorts which are now too big for me. Instead of throwing them in the vinnies bin, I decided to re-fashion them.

Using the Scientific Seamstress pattern, I knocked up these shorts. I am hoping they fit. I cut them out while Cam had his day nap and ran them up once all the boys were in bed. I plan to re-fashion a shirt of mine which I don't wear anymore, but still in good nick, using the scientific seamstress raglan pattern, with an applique to match the shorts.

I bought some natural food dyes and sprinkles from hullabaloo. On their site it suggested to do reverse fairy bread, because the sprinkles were white. You tint the butter, then put the sprinkles on. This has been a huge hit here :)

Productive Sunday

Well we were supposed to go camping this weekend, but the rain foiled those plans. We have a resolution to make every weekend that Josh has off (and there aren't many) count- Quality family stuff. So instead of bush walking and canoeing, we wandered around the markets (I met up with some lovely novo WAHMs too- little Peeps and Two little Munchkins ) then lunch by the river.

I should always remember how cheap seedlings are there too. $2 each for zucchini, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, capsicum and strawberries. We went back on the way out to grab more strawbs but they were all gone. :(

So now we have a chockas patch. I am crossing my fingers for some mammoth harvests. I think all I want now is some eggplant and a chilli tree. Oh! and more strawbs of course.

We also checked out the chicken motels . We know what we want now- so hopefully we will be collecting our very own eggs very soon.

Red lentil and Ricotta Lasagne

I scored this recipe from a www friend. Delicious to say the least, and low in calories- which at the moment is important. (I'm doing Calorie king, the maternal stores each of my 3 pregnancies have so kindly given me, are not budging so I'm doing my best to give them the ol' heave ho- especially seeing as though slogging it out at the gym does SFA )

Red Lentil & Ricotta Lasagne

Ingredients
1/2 cup red lentils
2t olive oil
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 red onion, finely chopped
1 red capsicum, finely chopped
2 zucchini, grated
2 carrots, grated
1 celery stick, finely chopped
2 x tins diced tomatoes (or the equivalent fresh)
2T tomato paste
1t dried oregano
350g ricotta
Lasagne sheets
Lite tasty cheese, grated (for topping)
White Sauce:
1/3 cup cornflour
3 cups skim milk
1/4 onion, don’t chop
1/2t ground nutmeg

Method
1. Soak the lentils in boiling water for 30 minutes and drain.
2. Heat oil and add garlic and onion and cook for two minutes. Add capsicum, zucchini and celery and cook for two to three minutes.
3. Add lentils, tomato, tomato paste, oregano and 1 1/2 cups of water. Bring slowly to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until the lentils are tender. Stir occasionally.
4. To make the white sauce, blend the cornflour with two tablespoons of the skim milk in a pan until smooth. Pour the remaining milk into the pan, add the chopped onion and stir over low heat until the mixture boils and thickens. Add the ground nutmeg and season with pepper, then cook over a low heat for five minutes before removing the onion.
5. Beat the ricotta with about 1/2 cup (125ml) of the white sauce. Preheat the oven to 180C. Spread one-third of the lentil mixture over the base of a three-litre, ovenproof dish. Cover with a layer of lasagne sheets. Spread another third of the lentil mixture over the pasta, then spread the ricotta evenly over the top. Follow with another layer of lasagne, then the remaining lentils. Pour the white sauce evenly over the top and sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake for one hour, covering loosely with foil if the top starts to brown too much. Allow to stand for five minutes before cutting.

Right. Here is a list of veg I need to plant this month. Blake and I have just weeded the veg patch and turned all the soil. I will get soome poo next week and turn that in. Then I want to plant

I am still waiting for my broadbeans to fruit. :( There are plenty of flowers on them.

Here is a handy tip for you- Add LSA to your breadcrumbs. When cooked, it turns extra crunchy.
I found since making my own breadcrumbs (have you see what is in the ingredients in the store bought ones???) I could never quite get the crust crunchy (I only use a little spray in the pan) I had started adding LSA to anything I could for the health factor, but soon realised it makes the breadcrumb crust just perfect :)

Also here is an apricot chicken recipe I have been working on. We love apricot chicken here, but was turned off due to all the numbers in the french onion soup mix and apricot nectar. So here is my (almost number-less) apricot chicken.

Fry off 1 brown and 1 red onion until soft, add garlic, brown chicken breast strips, add diced veg (I add red and green capsicum, zucchini, carrot) add 825g tin of apricot halves in juice, also adding juice. (I used Ardmona brand, it has firming agent (509) which, according to Additive Alert, is Calcium chloride- stomach irritant in sensitive people) also had in some chicken stock. let simmer until veg are soft. I added in a small amount of light sour cream (dairy farmers has no numbers) at the end. serve with rice . enjoy :)

Just What I Needed.

I have the most beautiful friends. Yesterday we went and saw Sex and The City 2. I scored 2.5 hrs free from "Muuuuuuuuum!" (x 1000) and feeding the boob monster. My breasts have never stayed in the bra that long for the last 8m!

I was really worried with all the terrible reviews of SATC2 that I would be wasting these precious few hours. But no. My friends surprised me with a pandora charm as an early birthday present (and some lindt <3) we sat and were able to watch a whole movie without being distracted, called upon or bled over.

I will admit I rather enjoyed the movie- although I was not an avid watcher of the series I did enjoy the fluffiness of the movies. It's one where I can chill out and watch, no lingering emotions afterwards. A movie to just sit and detach from the world for a short time.

But I guess the reason I loved it most was because I spent time with the most beautiful women on this planet. We must make this a more regular occurrence.

Sandbox Pants- Oliver + S

I saw these Sandbox pants made up on Clairey Sews. I had always overlooked Oliver + S patterns for 2 reasons. 1) because they mostly do girls clothes and 2) they don't have pretty pictures on the front of the pattern (yes, I am a marketers dream. LOL ) and I couldn't visualise how great they would look.

This pattern is super easy to follow and understand. I used brown widewale cord from spotlight and some cotton print from various places online.

I love the waisdtband, although I should have followed Claires lead and turned the back pockets so there is some of the cotton print showing. The boys were thrilled that I made them pants with pockets. Pockets are essential when it comes to boys wear- where else are they going to put all the treasures they find out and about- and where else am I going to tell them to put their hands when we go to a shop where grubby hands shouldn't be touching all the interesting things???

These are a size 3T, 2T and 6-12m. I think I'm going to invest in the same pattern for the sizes 4 and up.

I must get a move on though, Daddy has taken the older 2 boys (in their new pants) to the movies and the baby is asleep- I am keen to make some matching shirts for these pants. Don't want to waste the small window of uninterupted time. Especially because I need to do some baking for the week later on.

Pumpkin and Prune cake

Don't knock it until you try it :)

1cup SR flour
1cup wholemeal plain flour
3/4 cup raw sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 cup rice bran oil (I used a little less than a cup)
1 cup pureed pumpkin (I just boiled and mashed)
1 cup (give or take) chopped pitted prunes

Cook for 45min - 1hr
It delicious warm or cooled :)

I made the Schoolhouse Tunic by Sew Liberated in one night. It was super easy and straighforward. I didn't use linen like it suggested, because I couldn't bear the thought of ironing it everytime I wanted to wear it. lol.

I used something from SL (viscoe perhaps??? not sure), it's thick and had a nice drape like the pattern suggested.

It's size 10/12. I did add a little to the bodice for my ample bust. It is still a little snug around the back and upper arms, but still comfortable to wear. It's a good dress to feed in too. I can pop a boob out over the top. lol

Because of the boxy shape of the dress- it doesn't really suit my odd shape, so I added the belt.

I have been sewing up a storm for the boys lately. I have made 4 IMKEs using fabric from the Cratfy Mamas store (which feels soooo divine and is a pleasure to sew with BTW) and some from Spotlight. I love this pattern. there are so many combos, which means from 1 pattern I can do a whole stack of shirts without repetition. I love this pointed hood too. I am doing these hoods before they get too old and something so cute becomes totally uncool mum!

The striped IMKE has no hood, and it's actually just a horizontal stripe- not sure what happened when I took the photo???

I have also made some more Rilles. I love raglans on boys and these are super easy. (now that I have the hang of them)

I am anticipating a few more soon- but first I am working on something for me and some more stock for the shop.

If this doesn't pique your childs interest, I don't know what will. A rainbow of beetroot (straight from the garden) apple, orange, carrot, kiwi fruit and pear. This was demolished in about 23 seconds flat.

I also threw in the peel from all the apples and pears I put in the dehydrator.

My very first attempt at a shirt. This is from ottobre 6/2008 (size 68)from the crafty mamas shop. Fabric is Stella also from CM

I should have waited and used a co-ordinating thread, it would have hidden a few boo-boos. I am not too unhappy given it is a first attempt, although there are a few things I would like to do better, the neckline being one.

I don't have a double needle (my new machine that is on lay by does though. lol) and I don't have an overlocker (yet) so I kinda made do as best as I could.

Anyway, I do look forward to more of these, and I'd like to make Joel some matching leggings.

Low fat Brownie

I know making a brownie low fat kinda defeats the pupose- But in my battle to lose my maternal stores I still crave/want/desire sweet, delicious, chocolate.
I cannot remember where I got this recipe from, but it's easy and quick. So easy infact- I might even make another batch today.

LOW-FAT CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

¾ cup flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup raw sugar
low fat vanilla yoghurt- approx 2x 175g tubs
1 tsp vanilla

Sift together flour, baking powder, cocoa and add sugar.
Mix in yoghurt and vanilla. Mix to combine (takes a minute).
Spoon into 20cm square tin (lined with greaseproof paper) and bake for 25-30 mins at 180 deg C.

This would also be nice with some rasberries through it...

Small Harvest

When picking some beetroot leaves for the boys lunch wraps I noticed that the only bean plant that survived (out of 4 seedlings) was drooping with fresh green beans. They were perfect sweet and crunchy- They too went into the lunch boxes. :)

our caulis and broccoli has been attacked by something- I'm hoping we get something from them.

Chai Cupcakes

How yummy do they sound!? I snaffled the recipe from Mel and made them today. ( I used wholemeal flour and only 1 cup of raw sugar)

here is the recipe.

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups milk
2 black tea bags
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cardamom... See more
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
pinch of ground black pepper
3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 3/4 cup castor sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
2 tsp vanilla essence (or vanilla bean)
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
2 1/2 cups Plain flour

Method:
1). In a saucepan, heat the milk until just before boiling. Add the teabags and spices (including the split vanilla bean if using this), cover and remove from heat. Allow to stand for 10 minutes, then give the milk a stir and remove the teabags, squeezing them to remove as much tea flavour as possible. (and remove and scrape the vanilla bean). Allow to cool. Measure out 1 1/4 cups of this, adding extra (plain) milk if some has evaporated off.

2). Beat the sugar and butter until creamy. Add eggs. Sift together the baking powder, salt and flour.

3). Gradually add the spiced milk and sifted flour mix alternately, mixing well.

3). Spoon mixture into baking cases and bake at 190C for around 20 minutes, or until cakes are cooked (skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean). Allow to cool before icing.

Vanilla Chai Frosting:

100g softened butter
100g softened cream cheese
3 cups icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence (or 1 vanilla bean)
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp cardamon

Beat butter and cream cheese together, then add spices, vanilla and enough icing sugar to make the right consistency.

ENJOY!

I have finally got my mojo back when it comes to cooking. For a few months now, I have let the menu planning slide and baking only when I have to. With the lack of menu planning I was getting stuck in a rut with the same ol' same ol' dinners, even resorting to family meat pies that are stashed in the freezer from pie drives.

Now I am back to menu planning, shopping is cheaper and we are getting more variety. Last night Josh cooked some fish cakes from the " Simply too good to be True" cookbook series. They are delicious!!!! Kids loved them too. These are going to be in regular rotation I think. :)

Quilt Block Swap

I have joined a quilt block swap on a forum I visit. I have never been overly keen to try quilting, but I thought It would challenge me and help improve my sewing.

There are 9 of us, each with a different colour. I drew yellow. At first I was keen to find some cool yellow prints. But alas, yellow does not come in many funky prints. :( I really struggled.

Anyway, this is what I came up with.

Here they are all together. They make a nice sized little playmat I think ;) and to be honest with you, I think I may just enjoy quilting yet.

And because he is so darn cute, here is our mini man who turned 6m on thursday. Half a year gone already!!

Finally I have done the echino scooters mei tai!

I did stuff up and forgot to put in the ties when sewing up the hood, so they got stuck to the outside, I'm not happy about it :( but it will have to do.

I have also been busy with other things. I am hoping to have things rolling and ready to announce in a month or so.
